Credit Union Place in Summerside, P.E.I. is in the middle of putting in $700,000 worth of new equipment.

The upgrades include a new security system, a WIFI network, plus new staging and rigging systems. The arena is also getting new LED screens, which alone cost about $550,000.

J.P. Desrosiers, Summerside's director of community services, said much of the new equipment consists of items the arena previously had to rent when staging concerts.

"On an average concert event it's probably going to save us in the vicinity of about $5,000 in rentals," said Desrosiers.

"So if we do, you know, between eight and 10 concerts a year, that's a $50,000 savings, and that savings is now direct revenue back to the venue....And that's just concerts."

Desrosiers said the new LED screens will be installed in mid-April, in time for Grand Slam Curling.

The arena received about $480,000 from the federal government for the upgrades and the city is paying for the rest.
