Following complaints about truck noise in a residential neighbourhood in the north end of Summerside, council is considering restricting the hours for trucking in the city.

Council was presented Monday night with a 77-name petition from residents along South and West drives. They want the late-night truck noise to stop. The trucks are hauling goods up city streets from barges at all hours.

Mayor Basil Stewart said moving the truck route is not a good solution.

"Wherever they go, you know, you're just moving the problem around," said Stewart.

"If we can restrict the hours, hopefully if we work together on this we can come up with something that everybody can live with."

Council voted to ask city staff to meet with the two companies employing the late-night trucks.

The councillors hope that meeting will result in a compromise that will allow residents to sleep but also allow the businesses to continue making a living.
