Cornwall sports sign

Signs similar to this one have been popping up in sports venues in communities around North America. (Town of Cornwall)

The Town of Cornwall hopes some new signs posted this week at its sports facilities will encourage people to have respect for players, coaches and officials.

The signs are placed in clearly visible areas around each sport facility. They read, "Please remember: these are kids. Coaches are volunteers. Officials are human. Respect everyone in the game."

"We haven't had any issues in our sports facilities with disrespect," said facility coordinator Matthew McNally.

"We have over 800 youth in minor sport here in Cornwall, and we just thought we'd post the sign to proclaim that it is not acceptable to use verbal or non-verbal abuse in around our facilities."

McNally said the idea came from deputy mayor Corey Frizzell who heard about a similar sign program in another town in Canada.

McNally said there are 10 signs posted at town-owned sports facilities. They cost about $30 each.
