The Confederation Bridge is closed after a nine-vehicle crash in near whiteout conditions on Sunday, say police.

RCMP responded to the accident shortly after 11 a.m. The collision happened just past the toll booths where a number of lanes merge.

Police said five vehicles were "written-off," but there were no serious injuries.

"Well, visibility in the area is really non-existent at this point. High winds and blowing snow in the area. At this point we're still investigating the actual cause, but it looks like the visibility played a major factor in this pile up," said Sgt. Andrew Blackadar.

He said the Confederation bridge will be closed until about 2 p.m. so the collision can be cleared up.
