Community services burden called too big

Credit Union Place adds big responsibility

The City of Summerside is asking for too much from its community services director, says Coun. Corey Thomas.

Thomas wants the city to hold off hiring a new director until a review has been conducted. The director is responsible for community centres, parks and events, and for Credit Union Place, the city's 3,500-seat sports arena. Thomas said that's too much.

"If you look at most municipalities, you wouldn't have the director also managing a recreation complex of that size," said Thomas.

"It's a beast onto itself."

Thomas said the management structure for the city wasn't reviewed after Credit Union Place was built. He suggested the city might consider hiring a general manager for Credit Union Place

Community services in the city has had four directors in six years.
