City takes over Canada Day planning in Charlottetown
For the first time in 17 years the City of Charlottetown is hosting Canada Day activities.
In previous years Tourism Charlottetown ran the celebrations.
In March, the organization said it will no longer manage special events.
Donna Hurry is one of the co-coordinators of Saturday's event in Victoria Park.
"This is the first time the city of Charlottetown has done Canada Day since 1995. It's going to be different," said Hurry, a tourism officer with the city.
This year the fireworks will be set off from land at 10 p.m., not on a barge as in previous years.
"When the fireworks are on land it's ten times more sky painted with fireworks than it is on a barge," said Hurry.
Canada Day events start at 11:30 a.m.
"This year we decided to go with all local entertainers, and they're all musicians from P.E.I. So we have North Lakes, English Words, Jeff Morris, Sunday Punch," said Hurry.
Bad Habits and The love Junkies will also be playing.
The concert starts at noon.
