A Charlottetown teacher is in jail and facing charges of assault, sexual assault, and breaching a court order.
Sylvain Aritho Amfoubalela teaches at Birchwood Intermediate School. The alleged incident occurred June 5. It did not involve a student or a staff member at the school. There is a publication ban against naming the victim.
After being charged two weeks ago, Amfoubalela was released on the condition that he stay away from the alleged victim. But this past weekend it's alleged Amfoubalela showed up in her driveway.
On Monday, after an appearance in P.E.I. Supreme Court, he was sent to jail on the basis that he's a potential danger to the victim. Amfoubalela's lawyer asked for his client to be released because he had to supervise exams this week, but the judge did not grant that request.
The English Language School Board declined to comment on the case.
Amfoubalela will be in court June 24 to enter a plea.
