One man is homeless after a fire at a farmhouse in western P.E.I. on Thursday morning.

The front part of the century farmhouse in Carleton, P.E.I., near O'Leary, was fully engulfed in flames when fire and police arrived on the scene at around 11 a.m.

Firefighters from O'Leary, Alberton and West Point were on the scene for close to three hours.

RCMP describe the damage as "extensive."

No one was home when the fire broke out and a pet cat was not inside the building at the time.

The provincial fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.

The man had been doing renovations on the home, police say.
