Montague has hired seven artists to sculpt, paint and build pieces commemorating big moments in the town’s history.
One of the artists is Michael Shumate. He’s painting a mural of the Empress, the largest ship ever built in Montague. The mural will be mounted on Stewart and Beck Home Hardware on Main Street.
The project will be unveiled July 11, which is the start of the Montague Summer Days Festival.
"I think it's going to be a wonderful thing for the town," Shumate said. "I think it will bring people to the town that are interested in art.
"It will really rejuvenate the town in a wonderful way — there will be so much spin off from it and this is just the beginning."
Funding for the artists is coming from PEI 2014, the not-for-profit created to plan celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference.
