Two men charged with mischief after they ran away with a life-sized metal cutout of Anne of Green Gables in Charlottetown have had their cases referred to alternative measures.

Luke Maurice Campbell, 22, and Tyler Evan Leamont, 23, were charged after an incident in August.

The Crown prosecutor in the case said a cab driver saw two men in the early morning hours remove the cutout, which was bolted into place, and make off down the street with it.

The $1,100 figure was damaged, but repaired and put back up the next day.

That night the metal cutout was bent in half and repaired once again. The following night, someone removed the cutout's head.

The cutout is back on display outside the Confederation Centre of the Arts, but is now permanently fixed to the foundation.
