Anne Shirley is returning to the small screen, this time in a more modern-day setting.

A new 13-episode series was announced at the Banff World Media Festival over the weekend. Breakthrough Entertainment, an independent production company from Toronto, is working with Lucy Maud Montgomery's descendants to create the new work.

Breakthrough is planning a more contemporary take on Anne, who first appeared in the 1908 novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery and was last on television in the 1980s production by Sullivan Entertainment that starred Megan Follows.

That series led to legal disputes between Sullivan and the Montgomery family heirs. Montgomery's granddaughter, Kate Macdonald Butler, told Hollywood Reporter that dispute is behind them and she is looking forward to working with Breakthrough.
