The western P.E.I. town of Alberton has had two local businesses reopen in what one entrepreneur hopes will be an important change of fortune.

Alberton's only flower shop closed last year, and the Sidewalk Grill Café shut down in September.

Now a man originally from Alberton has moved back to open a new florist shop. Ian Curtis, who will run the store with his wife Kathryn, said shops like the Alberton Florist are key to keeping small towns alive.

"With populations aging, people less able or less willing to travel the distances, they need to have the shops within their community,"

"If you can't get your groceries, your basic needs or some giftware luxuries, then you're always travelling. So the question you'd ask yourself, well I'm always travelling, why do I live here?"

Two sisters from Ontario have moved to Alberton to operate The Sidewalk Grill Café.
