The multi-million dollar development was proposed by Privateers Enterprises. The buildings will include two- and three-bedroom units, and are promoted as seniors-friendly.
"I'm told that the need is there because as people age, you know, they're selling their homes and moving into apartments. It's more convenient for them," Coun. Corey Thomas, chair of the technical services committee.
"The reality is in Canada we do have an aging population and certainly it's no different here in Summerside. So people are moving into apartments and that seems to be the trend."
Council unanimously approved a required zoning amendment.
Thomas said the developer hopes to start work as soon as possible. Each complex will cost about $2.8 million.
