The provincial fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of fire at Montague apartment building.

A four-unit apartment building in Montague was evacuated early Sunday morning after fire broke out in one of the units.

Montague Fire Chief Harry Annear said the call came in at around 3 a.m.

He said when firefighters arrived at the Lower Montague Road building, flames had ignited the furniture and the ceiling was on fire in one unit.

Annear said the man living in the apartment woke to the smoke and escaped injury.

Annear said the interior of the apartment was destroyed.

He said firefighters did not hear any smoke detectors.

The deputy provincial fire marshal is investigating the cause.
