PMO getting a bum rap?

Some chuckles, some aggravation in Nunavut Tuesday as Prime Minister Stephen Harper begins his annual Northern tour.

In the official itinerary released by the Prime Minister's Office it says Harper will hold a couple of events in "Iqualuit, Nunavut," Tuesday. The proper spelling is actually "Iqaluit."

Now some might be quick to accuse the media of making a big fuss about nothing more than a extra "u" — unfortunately for the PMO and its defenders this extra vowel changes the word quite a bit.

Canadian Press is quoting the Office of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut as translating Iqaluit as "many fish."

Whereas, "Iqualuit," is closer to a derogatory term meaning — again this is according to the Languages Commissioner's office — "people with unwiped bums."

The Prime Minister's Office says it is simply a typo and has been corrected for future releases. (You can read the full email from Dimitri Soudas, the prime minister's press secretary, here.)

Now, the media needs to be careful about throwing stones on this one.

A quick search of a number of media sites — including our own — shows this is a common error committed by Southerners.

In fact, CBC viewers with a keen eye may spot a strip of red tape across one of our studio backdrops.

Across it is typed the word "Ottawa," beneath it is what was originally printed on the backdrop: "Iqualuit."
