A different kind of throne speech
Four pages.
About 700 words.
Roughly eight minutes.

That's all it took to re-open this session of Parliament with the speech from the throne read by the Governor General, Michaelle Jean.
It was so cold in Ottawa (-32 C with the windchill) that much of the pomp of this ceremony was also trimmed off. No 21 gun salute. No honour guard.
Just a quick drive up to the front door to drop the Governor General off.
The speech was short and not particularly sweet. It was focused on the economy and it warned, "Canadians face a difficult year perhaps a several difficult years."
Not exactly a comforting thought.
If this speech from the throne is unlike one you've seen before, prepare yourself.
The budget tomorrow is likely to fall into the same category.
