Second ballot results

Mauril Belanger, the MP for Ottawa-Vanier, did not have enough support from his colleagues to become Speaker of the House of Commons.
Belanger was eliminated from the second ballot, leaving 5 MPs left to stand for Speaker: three Conservatives, one Liberal and one NDP member.
When the results were announced, Belanger was in his seat in the House and appeared disappointed. Fellow Liberals Bob Rae and Michael Ignatieff shook his hand. Geoff Regan and Dan McTeague both gave him pats on the back.
Liberal MP Peter Milliken has been Speaker since 2001. The predictions on whether he can hang onto his job are varied. One Conservative MP suggested, "He's finished." But a cabinet minister privately predicted he will carry the day.
Many MPs seem to agree on one thing: the dark horse in this race could be the NDP member standing for Speaker, Joe Comartin. Many believe he has the support not only of his own caucus, but of the Bloc
