Listen closely - the story might just change

One of Gilles Duceppe's favourite stories he likes to tell these days to inspire Bloc supporters is the tale of a woman in South Africa who, voting for the first time in a free election, came to believe it was her ballot that put Nelson Mandela over the top.

Duceppe reminds each crowd Mandela won that first post-apartheid election with 88 per cent of the popular vote.

It always gets a laugh, but Duceppe always comes back to say that, in fact, every vote does count, and that the woman's story is the perfect example.

He has begun to recite the story so often, this morning he even told the crowd that the reporters following him around will probably start rolling their eyes having heard it so frequently.

But there is one variable in the story.

The age of the South African woman seems to change, depending on the day. Yesterday she was 82 at one point. This morning she was rejuvenated to just 60.
