The young Liberal ambush
Posted in Political Bytes Posted on September 8, 2008 08:37 PM | PermalinkIt was, in the end, a bad day for Jack Layton.
The NDP leader delivered a very good speech in Vancouver-Kingsway with a strong turnout, including a gang of young Liberals waiting outside.
As Layton left the meeting room, the Liberals started an uproar, screaming "Harper wants Jack," and "we want our vote back." This last statement was a reference to Layton's 2006 campaign call "lend us your vote."
These Liberals worry voters listened, and in exchange, cost Paul Martin a victory and sent Stephen Harper to 24 Sussex.
The young Liberals said the party didn't send them to ambush Layton's event. But they wanted to make a point that Stéphane Dion probably wouldn't mind seeing made. A vote for Layton, may, in some ridings, help see the Conservatives re-elected.
That's an idea the Liberals said all those who oppose Stephen Harper should be worried about.
