Pushing things back

Last December, David Brown submitted his special task force report, "Rebuilding the Trust: task force on governance and cultural change in the RCMP," to the government.

He made 50 recommendations.

Knowing it was a tall order, Brown recommended the government put together a reform implementation council "as quickly as possible" to advise the government and Mounties on how to make all those changes.

Furthermore, Brown highlighted the need for "timely success" and said the council's first progress report to Canadians should be issued no later than June 30th, 2008.

Well, it's now July. And there's still no report.

It seems the reason is that it took longer than expected to put the council together. Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day announced the appointment of Ian McAusland as chair of the Implementation Council at the end of March.

With only three months of work under the council's belt, it was decided members would need more time.

The new date for their public report is September 30th, 2008.
