Sandra Buckler's surprise resignation
Members of the press gallery were all at the prime minister's residence Thursday evening for his annual summer garden party. The children were enjoying the small petting zoo and pony rides, while reporters were chatting with cabinet ministers and ministerial staff.
Suddenly, a lot of those reporters were reading their BlackBerrys.
Sandra Buckler sent out a note saying she was leaving her job as director of communications for the Prime Minister's Office. Her note said that, after talking it over with family and close friends, she decided to leave the job that she held for 28 months.
Buckler has been ill with thyroid cancer. She also recently got married and her husband is being transferred to Ottawa so they can live in the same city.
As the media crowd thinned out, Buckler arrived at the party to say goodbye in person. She told reporters that she could either leave now, or wait until after the next election, which could still be several months away.
So she decided to go, just in time to enjoy a long weekend.
