A tradition is born?
After yesterday's first ever joint meeting of the Ontario and Quebec cabinets, Premiers Jean Charest and Dalton McGuinty invoked the names of Robert Baldwin, Louis LaFontaine and other greats of the pre-Confederation era as they described the significance of the day.
Premier Charest mentioned it was his invitation that had brought the Ontario ministers to Quebec City. A reminder there that in 1960 Quebec Premier Jean Lesage invited the other nine premiers to an informal get-together that became the annual premiers' conference and continues now as the Council of the Federation meeting.
Might a joint meeting of Ontario and Quebec ministers join the Victoria Day weekend and the Stanley Cup finals as a Canadian springtime tradition? Premier McGuinty has offered to play host in Toronto next year.
