What's in a name?
Is it Burma or Myanmar?
The name of the country devastated by a cyclone over the weekend is disputed.
Today in the House of Commons, Bev Oda, the Minister for International Cooperation, announced two million dollars to help the relief effort. "We have just received word that the UN has negotiated access with the government of Myanmar. We call upon the government of Myanmar to allow access to other international humanitarian organizations and to allow for an effective aid operation."
But Canada's policy is to refer to the country as Burma.
This afternoon the minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Bernier presented a certificate of honorary citizenship to Aung San Suu Kyi who is being held in detention in Burma.
Aung San Suu Kyi 's cousin, Dr. Sein Win, accepted the certificate on her behalf.
Minutes after Oda referred to Myanmar, Bernier went back to Burma. "This government will continue to stand alongside those who, like Aung San Suu Kyi, stand up for democracy, for human rights, the rule of law, and for all people of Burma."
