Stop the presses: Liberals applaud John Baird

New Democrat MP Nathan Cullen seemed to get carried away in question period today when pressing Environment Minister John Baird to move forward on Bill C-377 (The Climate Change Accountability Act.)

In making his point that Conservatives are stalling the bill, Cullen called Baird "Minister Mugabe" — likening him to Zimbabwe's dictator president Robert Mugabe, who's suspected of rigging recent elections and stalling the vote results from being made public.

Baird said he wouldn't "dignify the NDP's question with a response" and Conservatives stood up to applaud. Then so did Liberal MPs.

Deputy Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff even gave Baird a hearty two thumbs up amid the ovation.

Later, Liberal Denis Coderre asked Cullen to withdraw the remark, and he did — with an apology.

As for the applause for Baird — normally a target of Liberal heckling— said one Liberal MP afterward, "That's the only time you'll ever see that happen."
