Refund — at a cost

When they were in opposition, Conservatives complained bitterly about the hundreds of millions of dollars pumped into the federal gun registry.

They called it a waste of taxpayers' money.

Since coming into power, Conservatives have pumped money out of the registry. Quietly in Parliament yesterday, the government tabled the 2006 annual report from Canada's Firearms Commissioner.

It's the first report from the commissioner since Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day announced a number of major changes to the gun registry back in 2006.

Among them, Day declared an amnesty for people who had not yet registered their non-restricted firearms. That amnesty has been extended twice since then.

Day also said long-gun owners would no longer have to pay to register their weapons and the government would issue refunds to those who had already registered their firearms.

According to this latest annual report, the government made a refund to 350,000 gun owners, adding another $21 million to the overall cost of the gun registry.
