Latimer arrives in Ottawa
As Westjet flight 720 touched down at 1:23 PM EDT in Ottawa neither fellow passengers nor those waiting in the Ottawa airport terminal had any idea who the celebrity on board might be.
But the media did and they were all at the bottom of the elevator waiting for the appearance by Robert Latimer. He is in Ottawa and will be staying in an Ottawa halfway house for at least the next several months.
He is in Ottawa to begin what will almost certainly be a lengthy battle to overturn his conviction for killing his severely disabled daughter Tracy.
And Latimer liked the attention.
After all, coming to Ottawa puts him that much closer to the people, the courts and the answers he wants.
As well, all the attention he might get "isn't something you want to bring to your front yard." Latimer said he has people all over the country helping him and may start a letter writing campaign. He needed to go somewhere for his conditional release and Ottawa seemed a good enough spot to serve his time. Even a citizen of Ottawa had come up to him in the airport and offered to make him dinner.
Looking tired and distracted, and wearing a gray jacket which matched his silvery hair, Latimer said, "I didn't sleep much last night so I'll try to do some of that." With that he and his sister Marjorie Mosiencko, who had been waiting for him, grabbed his bags and left the terminal.
