Is anyone listening?
"The world is watching." So said Defence Minister Peter MacKay as the debate on Canada's role in the Afghanistan mission got underway Monday in the House of Commons.
MacKay told MPs that the debate is one that will reverberate.
Maybe so.
His Conservative colleagues may have been glued to TV sets in their offices. They certainly weren't in the House of Commons to listen to the minister launch the historic debate.
Only about a dozen Conservative MPs flanked the minister, ensuring that there were no empty seats on television.
But there were plenty out of the camera's sight. Only one cabinet colleague, Industry Minister Jim Prentice was in attendance.
And when Liberal Leader Stephane Dion responded in a speech that demanded some answers, including an explanation of why the government believes only a thousand more troops are needed, MacKay listened for a few minutes then left, leaving Dion addressing his remarks to an empty Conservative front bench.
