In the hot seat

The prime minister's deputy press secretary, Dimitri Soudas, was called as a witness today before a House of Commons committee looking into a media report that he tried to intervene in a dispute between the Department of Public Works and a developer from Montreal.

Soudas had company.

Sitting in the audience was Ian Brodie, the prime minister's chief of staff. Brodie wanted to appear as a witness too.

The Conservative MPs on the committee endorsed the idea, but opposition MPs voted it down. At least for today.

Also there to watch some of the proceedings was Carolyn Stewart Olsen, Harper's press secretary. Not seen: the prime minister's Director of Communicatons, Sandra Buckler. Soudas told the committee he reports to her.
