Time for a new cabinet?

Ask any of them and they will tell you the same thing — this year's Conservative caucus retreat in Charlottetown has been an unabashed love-in for MPs.

One after another, they emerged from strategy sessions to tell reporters caucus solidarity is at an all-time high and the Conservative family has never been more unified.

But there's another subject most were reluctant to talk about: soon they may need a new family photo. That's because a cabinet shuffle is almost certainly in the works.

In fact, sources tell us that ministers have been told not to travel during the week of August 13th because that is when they are expected to learn their fate.

So far, much of the speculation has been about a relatively small shuffle. But Conservative MPs at the Charlottetown gathering were increasingly talking about a much larger reassigning of responsibilities, one designed to make a statement and present a fresh face for a government that has become stagnant in the polls.

Some Conservatives suggest a larger shuffle would have other advantages. For one, it might give ministers who have underperformed in their current portfolios a second chance somewhere else. Also, it would take some heat off ministers who are demoted, by shifting the focus to all the new faces coming in.

Of course, some of this speculation may be just wishful thinking by cabinet wannabes. And current ministers tell us that speculation on their part is pointless because only one person knows what their future holds and that's their boss, Stephen Harper.
