Polaris mine to close next year

One of Nunavut's mines is closing. The Polaris mine near Resolute Bay in the high arctic will close down in July 2002.

The mine has been digging out zinc for over 20 years.

Sustainable Minister Olayuk Akesuk says he does not know where the local minors will work after the mine has closed.

"There are not that many Inuit employees but there were lots of miners working there before," he says.

Akesuk adds they will work with the federal environment department to clean up the mine site when it is abandoned.
