A 24-year-old man is dead after crashing his motorcycle in the south Ottawa community of Barrhaven on Thursday evening.

Ottawa police, paramedics and firefighters responded to the intersection of Strandherd Drive and Jockvale Road at about 9:45 p.m. Thursday for a single-vehicle crash.

They found a 24-year-old motorcycle rider on the ground without vital signs and his bike several metres away.

Police say the man was thrown from his bike after losing control.

Paramedics said he sustained severe head injuries and the coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.

Ottawa police closed Strandherd between Greenbank and Jockvale roads for several hours to investigate the crash. The road was reopened just after 4 a.m. Friday.

Collision investigators continue to analyze the evidence.
