A 49-year-old man remains in custody in connection to a possible case of domestic violence turned deadly after a woman died in hospital, Gatineau police confirmed Monday evening.

Police were called to a basement apartment at 45 Symmes St. in western Aylmer around 8:20 p.m. Sunday night.

A 42-year-old woman was found inside with major injuries, and later died in hospital around 2:30 a.m. Monday. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday in Montreal.

Police said the death is considered suspicious.

A 49-year-old man, described by police as an "important witness," was arrested in connection with the death but has not been charged, police said.

Gatineau police spokesperson Pierre Lanthier said Monday that investigators have not confirmed the relationship between the man and the woman. The man was interviewed on Monday afternoon and remains in custody.

"It's a possible (case of) domestic violence," Lanthier said. "I cannot mention anything about how she died. Was there any weapon used in the case? I cannot say anything about that right now. There's still some work that has to be done by our police officers, by our investigators and also the forensic team."

No other arrests are expected in this case, police said.

Police have not released the woman's name.
