Dr. Thierry Mesana, a cardiac surgeon and former chief of the institute's cardiac surgery division, will replace Dr. Robert Roberts.

Mesana starts his new, five-year role April 1, becoming the institute's third CEO.

"Thierry Mesana is an internationally recognized cardiac surgeon," said Lawrence Soloway, chair of the institute's board of directors, in a news release.

"He is also a remarkable leader who has contributed immensely to the institute's growth and success over the last 12 years. We are confident that he will be a very capable CEO and that our institute will continue to shine worldwide under his leadership."

Mesana was trained in France in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, and he received his PhD there.

At the heart institute, Mesana led "significant changes" in the cardiac surgery division, "including the clinical development of mitral valve repair and aortic root repair and the enhancement of the beating-heart coronary-bypass surgery program," according to the news release.
