With less than a week until Remembrance Day, police in Kingston, Ont., are trying to figure out who owns a row of military medals turned over to an officer.

Const. Steve Koopman said police aren't sure if the decorations were lost or stolen.

He said they were not found during a criminal investigation but rather given to a general crime unit detective Tuesday by a police "source."

Police on Wednesday released a photo of three of the decorations that they describe as a 1939-1945 star, a France and German star and a defence medal.

Koopman said police are in possession of more medals but aren't releasing the total number or types to make sure anyone who comes forward to claim them has that information to prove they're the rightful owner.

Police said they've searched through their records and haven't found any incident to link the medals to.
