Rob Schilkie said he and his family knew Zachary Lapointe, that he loved the outdoors and was experienced on the water. (CBC)

"(Lapointe) had numerous boats through all of his life and without commenting on the circumstances, definitely knew the water in the area," said Rob Schilkie, who said he knew Lapointe.

"You kind of expect beginners to get themselves into trouble, but that definitely wouldn't have been the case here."

Boater Mike Lavoie said hazards in the area include shoals, rocks and whirlpools.

"At night, if they're out there, then they should have proper lighting, know the topography of the water," he said.

OPP said the Petawawa Fire Department, CFB Petawawa military police and firefighters and Renfrew County paramedics assisted at the scene.

The police investigation continues and no cause has been identified.
