Travis Porteous is dead after he fatally shot a municipal councillor and seriously injured his former partner before turning the gun on himself, a source told CBC News.

Porteous, 33, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the shooting inside the councillor's mansion in the eastern Ontario community of Mississippi Mills, southwest of Ottawa, provincial police said.

Porteous later succumbed to his injuries. His uncle Orville Porteous declined an interview but told CBC News it was a difficult time for the family.

Sarah Cameron, a 28-year-old mother of two who had been involved with Porteous, also suffered life-threatening injuries but was in stable condition Friday morning, the Ottawa Hospital confirmed.

Her lawyer Carolyn Gerbac told CBC News that she is "recovering well" after surgery and will remain in hospital for "another week or so."

Friends and colleagues told CBC News their relationship was troubled.

Her father, 65-year-old Bernard Cameron, the councillor for Almonte Ward, died at the scene. He was well-known in the community, where he also taught high school for many years.

Councillor 'died a hero'

At a vigil in honour of the Almonte councillor, mourners remembered Cameron as a "gentle soul" who loved his community.

Mississippi Mills Mayor Shaun McLaughlin said Cameron "died a hero."

Coun. John Edwards said Cameron was trying to keep his family safe when he was killed.

"He died doing what he ought to have done, which is protect his family," Edwards said.

Sarah Cameron is a personal support worker at the Almonte Country Haven retirement home.

Her co-workers are collecting donations for her young son and daughter. An online fundraiser was also launched on Thursday to help with Bernard Cameron's funeral costs, as well as Sarah Cameron's recovery.
