Papermaps @ Avande Garde Bar, Saturday
Saturday is chock-full of options: if you're in Barrhaven you must Oktoberfest with Hollerado. If you're in Wakefield dance to the Blacksheep for Souljazz Orchestra. If you're in Hintonburg don't miss C.R. Avery at the Elmdale Oyster House. But, if you're downtown or want to come here, check out Papermaps at Avante Garde Bar. As I mentioned last week, less is more in indie rock these days. The giant swelling memberships seem to have gone the way of Broken Social Scene and everybody's paring down. Toronto's Papermaps has downsized from five members at its largest to just three. It's really all about the band leader Dean Marino's songwriting anyway. Papermaps play Avante Garde Bar Saturday night with Greg McEvoy and Brittany Kwasnik.
Saturday at 5:05 p.m. on Radio One David Francey and I sat down for a great conversation on Sparks St last week. His new album So Say We All touches on his bouts of depression and some of the highs of his life at the same time. David's playing an already sold-out show in Burnstown tomorrow (Friday) but they added another one for a week from tonight at Neat Cafe, so get a ticket asap. I will also have a Sprinterview with Pembroke's own April Verch.
Amanda Putz is Ottawa Morning's music columnist and the host of Bandwidth, which you can hear Saturdays at 5pm here on CBC Radio One.
