Thanksgiving Monday: What's open and closed in Ottawa

Public libraries, city-run day-cares and most shopping malls? Closed. Museums, many public swimming pools and the Rideau Centre? Open. Check here to see if the service you need is running on the holiday.

Public libraries, city-run day-cares and most shopping malls are closed, while museums, many public swimming pools and the Rideau Centre are open on Monday. Check the lists below to see if the service you need or are expecting will be open on the holiday.

City services

Regular parking regulations and restrictions will apply on Monday despite the holiday.

The following facilities or services are closed:

  • Ottawa City Hall and all Client Services Centres
  • Provincial Offences Court at 100 Constellation Crescent

The 3-1-1 Contact Centre will be open for urgent matters requiring the city’s immediate attention. Call 3-1-1 or 613-580-2400 to speak to a customer service representative. For persons with a hearing-related disability, call (TTY: 613-580-2401).

Shopping Centres

The Rideau Centre is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Bayshore, St. Laurent, Carlingwood and Place D'Orleans are all closed.


The Museum of Nature and National Gallery of Canada, both normally closed on Mondays, will be open on Thanksgiving.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization, Canada Science and Technology Museum and Canadian Aviation and Space Museum are all open. Thanksgiving is also the last day for the Aviation Museum's special exhibit "Star Wars: Identities."

Library and Archives Canada is closed, except by appointment.

Ottawa Public Health

The following facilities or services are closed:

  • City-operated child care centres
  • Ottawa Public Health Information Line (OPHIL) and AIDS-Sexual Health Info Line
  • Sexual Health Centre and Satellite Clinics
  • Dental clinics
  • Well Baby Drop-in
  • SITE office at 179 Clarence Street is closed but the SITE mobile van will be operating on a regular schedule from 5 11:30 p.m.

To report an urgent public health issue, contact 3-1-1. Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 (TTY1-866-797-0007) is also available to obtain health advice or general health information from a registered nurse.

Garbage and recycling

  • There is no curbside garbage, green bin, recycling or leaf and yard waste collection Monday. Pickup will be delayed one day for the rest of the week.
  • Multi-residence green bin, recycling, bulky item or leaf and yard waste will also be delayed one day.
  • Multi-residence garbage collection will take place on the regularly scheduled day, including Monday.
  • The Trail Waste Facility will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.

Transit service: what's open

OC Transpo will operate a Sunday schedule. Call 613- 560-1000 or text 560560 plus your four-digit bus stop number for automated schedule information. Call 613-741-4390 or visit for more information.

OC Transpo Sales and Information Centres at Rideau Centre office, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The OC Transpo Information Centre (613-741-4390) will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Transit service: what's closed

  • All other OC Transpo Sales and Information Centres.
  • The OC Transpo Customer Relations Department (613-842-3600).
  • O-Train service will be closed between Carleton and Bayview stations on Saturday, Sunday and Thanksgiving Monday to accommodate the construction of a new parking facility at Carleton University. Alternative bus service will be provided between Carleton Station and Bayview Station on OC Transpo bus Route 107.


All branches of the Ottawa Public Library are closed.

Many pools, arenas and fitness centres will be open for public swimming, aquafitness, skating and fitness classes with modified schedules. Please check or the facility for details.

Many registered programs at swimming pools, community centres and arenas are cancelled. Check with the facility to confirm, as some exceptions will apply.

Most programming at arts centres, archives, galleries, theatres and museums will not be offered. Check or their facility to confirm, as some exceptions may apply.
