An SUV crashed into an office building in downtown Gatineau early Thursday morning in what police say may have been an attempt to steal an ATM machine inside.

It happened at the entrance of 200 Montcalm St., between Hanson and Lois streets, at about 2:45 a.m.

A grey 2012 Ford Escape was found inside the first floor of the building and many windows were smashed, police said.

No one was there when emergency crews arrived and the attempt to steal the machine or its contents failed, police said. The SUV had been stolen Wednesday night in Gatineau.

A canine unit was called in to search for a suspect or suspects that are believed to have fled the scene, and the SUV was towed out of the building.

Police said a similar theft attempt happened overnight at 1151 Saint Joseph Blvd.

The suspect is described as a white man, about five feet nine inches to five feet 11 inches tall, weighing about 180 to 200 pounds. Police said he was wearing a red sweater, a blue cap with a logo, black sungalsses, grey jeans, white sneakers and a black backpack with white stripes on the straps.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det.-Sgt. Jonathan Lamontagne at 819-243-2345, ext. 6230.
