A son managed to save his father, who was in a wheelchair, from fast-moving flames that engulfed their bungalow on Carp Road early Wednesday morning.
The call at 1200 Carp Rd. came in just after 4 a.m., and it took firefighters more than an hour to bring the flames under control.
The two residents escaped only with the clothes they were wearing, the fire department said. The father was treated by paramedics for minor smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital.
In addition to the flames, firefighters were dealing with a severed electrical line that fell onto the road because of the fire. Heavy smoke also reduced visibility in the area.
Carp Road is closed between Hazeldean Road and Stittsville Main Street, and is expected to remain closed well into the morning rush hour.
Damage to the home is estimated at about $350,000, and the Salvation Army and Red Cross were called in to help the family.
The fire is believed to have started in a rear bedroom, the fire department said, though the cause of the blaze is so far unknown.
