Winter in Ottawa is going out much like it began: buried under a mound of snow.

As much as 20 centimetres of snow is expected to fall tonight and tomorrow, as a low-pressure system moves northeast from Michigan, bringing a mix of precipitation to southern and eastern Ontario.

Eastern Ontario can expect "significant" snowfall for tonight and especially Tuesday, according to Environment Canada, which has issued a special weather statement for the region.

The forecast calls for as much as five centimetres of snow overnight beginning just after midnight, with another 10 cm of snow throughout the day.

Snowfall warnings have been issued for Cornwall, Prescott Russell and Morrisburg, where 15 to 20 cm of snow are expected.

Spring officially arrives Wednesday evening, on a day when flurries are expected and the high will be -1 C.

Ottawans have had to dig themselves out of a number of major snowfalls this season, beginning when 40 cm fell on Dec. 21.

The city has already spent $36 million of its 2013 budget of $56 million for snow removal, so while city workers will plow the main streets on Tuesday there will be no snow removal.

Instead, the city will let the snow melt on the weekend, when it is expected to be sunny and above zero during the day.
