The afternoon commute remains slow as snow continues to fall in the Ottawa and Gatineau region.

Police say there have been more than 80 collisions since the snow began to fall on midnight Tuesday. Three people were injured in collisions on the Quebec side of the National Capital Region, according to Gatineau police.

Only five OC Transpo buses needed help during this morning's commute, an improvement from the last major snowstorm, when many of the articulated buses went off the road or had challenges going up hills. OC Transpo said it had extra staff on duty today to cope with the storm.

Commuters across the city grappled with another slow, snowy ride to work this morning as the winter storm from the U.S. moved through the region. About 10 to 15 centimetres of snow — and possibly 20 cm in some regions — is expected to fall today.

Schools were open and school buses were running throughout Ottawa. But buses for the Upper Canada District School Board of Eastern Ontario and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario were cancelled. Schools in those boards remained open, however.

The last full day of winter is ending very much like the first day did for Ottawa residents. On Dec. 21, an average of 40 cm of snow fell in the National Capital Region.

The snow started near midnight in Ottawa and is expected to continue into late Tuesday night, according to CBC climatologist Ian Black.

Snowfall warning in Cornwall region

Snowfall warnings have been issued in the far east of Ontario, including the communities of Cornwall and Morrisburg, where 15 to 20 cm is expected.

City crews were out early Tuesday morning to begin clearing arterial roads in anticipation for the morning commute.

"We're well-prepared, we have not changed into spring mode or summer mode yet. We're still well prepared for the event today, we have lots of salt and sand on hand to deal with the event," said City of Ottawa spokesman Luc Gangé.

During last year's relatively mild winter, about 110 cm of snow fell, according to Gangé. Heading into Tuesday's storm, Ottawa has already seen an estimated 205 cm of snow this winter.
