City crews in Manotick were cleaning Tighe Street Monday morning in front of what was left of Manotick Natural Market butchery and bakery, which burned to the ground.

The fire started at 11:18 p.m. Sunday and it took local firefighters nearly five hours to get the blaze under control.

Only a small corner of Manotick Natural Market's facade remains, but firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to a home less than a metre away.

When firefighters realized the business couldn't be saved, they turned their attention to protecting the residence.

While the fire completely destroyed the bakery and butcher, firefighters managed to save the home next door. (CBC)

Local fire chief Tim McNeely said he spoke briefly with the market's owner, who moved his business to the 1140 Tighe St. location in September from the mall where he'd been operating for 28 years.

The owner is devastated, said McNeely.

Yellow tape surrounds the site where the charred remains of the butchery and bakery are still smoking. The other half of the building was unoccupied commercial space.

McNeely said the cause of the fire is unclear and because of the damage it will be difficult to determine. Gas was temporarily shut off to the area.

There were no injuries.
