Ottawa police say that they will double checkstop staff in an effort to catch impaired drivers over the weekend in anticipation of St. Patrick's Day revelry on Sunday.

Last year 800 vehicles were stopped and three people were charged for drunk driving. Despite that effort Erin Vance, a mother of two, was killed in a St. Patrick's Day hit-and-run while she was walking along a road in Constance Bay.

Jeremy Rees, 23, was sentenced to nearly five years in prison for impaired driving causing death.

"It was a terrible tragedy that struck the community very hard, and we'd like to do everything we can to avoid that this year," said Sgt. John Kiss.

As in previous years, the RCMP, provincial and city police will team up to expand their checkstop presence.
