The police funeral for a 27-year-old police officer shot and killed in northern Quebec will be held in Ottawa on Saturday.

Steve Déry, a Kativik Regional Police Force officer, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute in northern Quebec on Saturday night. His partner was also shot and taken to hospital. A body believed to belong to the gunman was found inside the home Sunday, police said. Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau confirmed Tuesday evening the funeral will be on Mar. 9 at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Cathedral on Sussex Drive.

Visitations will be held at the Heritage Funeral Home, located at 2871 St Joseph Blvd in Orleans, on Friday, Mar. 8 from 10 a.m. to Noon, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Police said those who wish to express their condolences to the family and friends of Constable Déry can do so by e-mail at condolences@krg.ca.

A police officer others 'could model themselves after'

Ottawa police got a request from Kativik police Tuesday to take the lead with the funeral arrangements, said Bordeleau.

"In these tragic times we want to do what we can for his family," said Bordeleau.

Kativik police issued a statement Monday, saying they had lost a brother, a friend and a "tremendous police officer."

"His smile and good spirits will be forever remembered. He was a police officer in which all officers could model themselves after. When Steve Dery took his final First Air flight home, he took a piece of each officer with him; he will be in our hearts and memories forever,"

Déry grew up in Orleans. His family, have asked for privacy. His brother, Ben Déry, is an Ottawa firefighter, and the fire department issued a statement extending their condolences on Sunday.

'I miss him already'

Luc Lauzon grew up with Déry and said he last saw him a few years ago, before he left to work up north.

"We just grew up really close, like brothers," said Lauzon.

"Big heart, big smile, good laugh, and he'll be remembered for a long time by all of his friends and family. I miss him, already," he said.

"He left us doing good for the community. I mean, he'll be remembered as a hero and that's exactly how he should be remembered."
