Gatineau police have arrested a man after a failed break-and-enter turned into a three-and-a-half hour standoff.

Police were called at about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday after a reported break-and-enter attempt at a home on Notre-Dame-de-l'Ile Street.

Martin Joanisse, 51, said he saw the suspect poking around his backyard carrying a large black bag. "I said freeze and he started running, so I started running after," he said.

Joanisse chased the suspect a block and a half to another home near the intersection of Sacré-Coeur Boulevard and Champlain Street, and stood watch until police arrived.

The suspect then refused to leave the home.

At least seven police vehicles surrounded the building and set up a perimeter, after which Gatineau police's tactical unit and negotiators arrived.

Champlain, Notre Dame, Marston Street and a portion of Sacré-Coeur were closed to traffic.

The suspect threw plates at the officers, then tactical officers moved in after police said the suspect started to harm himself.

The 30-year-old suspect was taken to Hull hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Police said they have reason to believe there is still one more suspect at large and are hoping the man in custody will be able to provide some information as to his whereabouts.
