A well-known Deep River couple were found dead after a fire broke out in a room of their house early Friday morning.
It happened sometime around 1 a.m. at 6 Cabot Pl., a two-storey home off Ridge Road occupied by John and Eleanor Lipsett, who were in their 70s, according to Deep River police Const. Robert Medeiros.
The fire started in a room on the first floor, Medeiros said. It was contained there by fire crews from Deep River and Laurentian Hills.
Firefighters then found the couple without vital signs on the second floor of the home.
Medeiros said they were longstanding, prominent members of the small community.
The home was equipped with a working smoke alarm, but police and firefighters are reminding people that it's important to have working smoke alarms on every floor.
The Office of the Fire Marshal of Ontario is investigating, with help from Deep River police and firefighters.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
