A man who barricaded himself inside an Orleans home and threatened to kill himself Friday morning surrendered peacefully, police tell CBC News.

Police were called to the scene on Oaklawn Crescent at about 11 a.m., determined the man was armed with a long gun and formed a perimeter around the house.

Gardenway Drive in Orleans was closed from Charlemagne Boulevard to Rougemount Crescent and Jeanne-Sauvé elementary school on nearby Gardenway Drive, at the direction of police, went into lockdown.

Nearly two hours later, just before 1 p.m., the man surrendered and was taken to hospital.

Inspector Don Sweet of the Ottawa police described the situation as a distressed person, armed with a long gun of some kind, who was threatening suicide.

Police pulled back to "an appropriate position" and began negotiations.

"The gentleman fortunately came out," said Sweet. "We're dealing with this as a mental health issue ... we'll investigate a little further but I don't know if there'll be any charges really appropriate for this."

Roads have since reopened and Jeanne-Sauvé school is no long under lockdown.
