2 firefighters hurt during 2 Saturday morning fires

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries battling two separate fires on Kenwood Avenue and Riverside Drive on Saturday morning.
The first fire broke out at 546 Kenwood Ave. around 4:40 a.m. Firefighters were initially called to a home on nearby Hillcrest Avenue, where a homeowner reported the smell of smoke in his house.
When firefighters arrived, they found no evidence of fire. When they returned to their vehicles, they spotted a two-storey house fully engulfed in flames on nearby Kenwood.
No one was home at the time. Neighbours told firefighters the family was on vacation.
One firefighter was assessed by paramedics at the scene for minor smoke inhalation, but was released a short time later.
Damage to the house has been estimated at about $500,000.

A 911 caller reported that a fire had started in her kitchen on the fourth floor at about 5:45 a.m.
The kitchen was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, and it was brought under control by about 6:30 a.m.
One firefighter was taken to hospital with an elevated heart rate, and remained in hospital undergoing tests later Saturday. The fire department said it doesn't appear to be serious.
Damage was estimated at about $70,000.
