Four fires kept the fire department busy over the weekend and caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

The first broke out at 35 Birch Ave., early Saturday morning near Hemlock Road and St. Laurent Boulevard. The home was in the late stages of construction and no one was living there at the time.

It started at about 1:30 a.m. and took firefighters an hour to bring under control. Firefighters were worried that winds might spread the flames to a home next door and set up water streams to prevent that.

No one was hurt.

The fire caused an estimated $300,000 in damage, as well as $5,000 to a neighbouring home.

Loretta Avenue South apartment building

The second fire happened early Sunday morning at 237 Loretta Ave. S., near Beech and Preston streets.

Firefighters received multiple calls about smoke on the third floor of an apartment building at about 5 a.m.

Firefighters had to break into unit 17 to stop the flames.

The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the building, and another $50,000 to its contents.

Mer Bleue Road house

The third fire happened just more than two hours later at a home at 2916 Mer Bleue Rd. The two people who live there called the fire department about flames in the basement.

It took about an hour to bring the flames under control.

No one was hurt, but the two residents have been temporarily displaced.

Damage is estimated at about $75,000 to the building and its contents.

Somerset Street West restaurant

The fourth fire happened later Sunday morning at Ju Xiang Yuan, a Chinese restaurant on Somerset Street West near Bronson Avenue.

The fire broke out in the main-floor kitchen at about 10:15 a.m. and caused about $200,000 in damage. No one was working there at the time and there were no reports of injuries.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 11:20 a.m.

Four or five people living in the two floors above the restaurant, who weren't home at the time, have been displaced, according to the fire department.
